In 2024, we partnered with CoverGenius to introduce XCover Booking Protection to ticket buyers. It’s a simple way to give visitors peace of mind, especially when they’re purchasing tickets far in advance, sometimes even a year ahead. For organisers, offering Booking Protection is free.
What is Booking Protection?
Booking Protection allows customers to protect their ticket purchase during checkout. If they’re unable to attend for personal reasons, such as illness, injury, or the loss of a loved one, they can request a refund directly through CoverGenius. Organisers retain the revenue, and tickets can be resold.
Customers who opt in simply activate their account, upload the necessary documents, and submit a claim. CoverGenius handles all claims, so you can focus on running your event rather than resolving refund requests. This means that you save time on your customer support.
Why this matters for you
We’ve been tracking the impact across events that use Booking Protection, and here’s what our data shows:
- Shops offering Booking Protection see an average 0.47% increase in conversion rate.
- Customers feel safer making a purchase, which helps drive earlier sales.
- Refund requests and chargebacks drop significantly because customers have a clear, structured way to cancel if something comes up.
Even in markets with a strong resale culture, Booking Protection hasn’t negatively impacted performance. In fact, it helps reduce friction for customers who might otherwise hesitate to commit, and that boost in confidence often translates into a higher conversion rate for your ticket sales.
Our data doesn’t show any significant differences between countries or markets. What does stand out, however, are the results across different event types. For festivals, where there’s often a strong secondary ticket market, Booking Protection still performs well. In fact, around 9% of festival orders include it.
This is likely because festival tickets tend to be more expensive and often include add-ons such as accommodation or transportation. For visitors, this creates the impression that reselling is less straightforward, making them more inclined to protect their purchase up front than to take a risk.
Protection without hindrance
If you're concerned about how it looks in your shop, don't be. Booking Protection is integrated subtly, so it doesn’t interrupt the checkout flow or distract from the sale. We also offer a streamlined integration that’s even less intrusive. This lets you keep your checkout exactly how you want it.
Organisers such as Thuishaven, Paradigm, Keinemusik, and Verknipt already have Booking Protection enabled and have seen the benefits firsthand. It builds trust, drives more confident sales, and reduces the time you spend handling support requests.
