European payment systems are undergoing their most significant shift in over a decade. If you follow fintech news, you might have heard about Wero, the digital wallet created by the European Payments Initiative (EPI) to allow instant, pan-European payments.

For event organisers with online ticket shops, as with any other e-commerce platform, it’s essential that your available payment methods be both easy to use and familiar. After all, the easier it is for your fans to pay, the more tickets you can sell.

Here is everything you need to know about Wero and how it affects your specific market, and what Weeztix is doing to support event organisers through the transition.

What is Wero?

Wero is a new, sovereign European payment solution backed by a group of Europe’s major banks (including BNP Paribas, Deutsche Bank, ING, and others). The goal is simple: to create a unified European standard that reduces reliance on US-based providers like Visa, Mastercard, and PayPal.
For ticket buyers, Wero promises a smoother mobile experience.

  • Payments move between banks instantly.
  • Data stays on European servers with strict EU banking security.
  • It supports one-click payments, easy refunds, and eventually features like "Buy Now, Pay Later" and loyalty integration.

What will this look like in my country?

Here is an in-depth look at how the rollout is unfolding across key European markets and what it means for your ticket buyers.

The Netherlands

In the Netherlands, Wero is the direct evolution of the current market leader, iDEAL. The EPI has acquired iDEAL and has set in motion a transition plan that will run from 2025 through 2027. As of January 2026, we will enter the first phase, during which the checkout experience will begin to display a co-branded ‘iDEAL | Wero’ logo.

This gradual change is designed to be seamless for Dutch consumers who are already accustomed to bank-based mobile payments. While the familiar flow remains, the underlying technology is being upgraded to a European standard. Over time, Wero will add features that iDEAL historically lacked, such as instant refunds and a dedicated consumer wallet. For you, this means iDEAL's high conversion rates will continue, with added cross-border capabilities that make it easier for international visitors to buy tickets for Dutch events.

Germany

In Germany, the strategy is distinctively competitive. Wero already launched in Germany in mid-2024 with the explicit goal of challenging PayPal and Klarna. By late 2025, Wero has successfully activated e-commerce payments, allowing German ticket buyers to pay directly from their bank accounts without a third-party middleman.

The system is backed by major German banks, including Sparkassen, Volksbanken, and Deutsche Bank. For event organisers, this is a welcome development. Wero offers a privacy-focused, bank-backed alternative that often comes with lower transaction fees compared to credit cards or PayPal. With large retailers like Lidl and Decathlon already using the payment system, consumer trust is building quickly.

Belgium

Belgium is currently in the midst of a major transition. Wero is set to replace the popular Payconiq service, which was previously acquired by the EPI. As of late 2025, the rollout is entering a critical phase where the two systems coexist. As a result, ‘Payconiq by Bancontact’ will continue to exist, but be rebranded to simply ‘Bancontact’ by the spring of 2026 and be supported by all Belgian banks. Wero is a separate app and is currently supported by Belfius, BNP Paribas Fortis, ING, KBC, Argenta, Bank Van Breda, Beobank, Crelan and vdk bank.

For Belgians who are used to scanning QR codes for many of their day-to-day purchases, the user experience will remain reassuringly familiar. The pink QR code stickers seen at shops and events are being redesigned to feature Wero and bancontact.

France

France has moved swiftly to adopt the new standard. Wero was designated as the official replacement for Paylib, the mobile payment service used by millions of French consumers. The migration began in late 2024, with major banks such as BNP Paribas, Société Générale, and La Banque Postale automatically transitioning their users to Wero within their existing banking apps.

By late 2025, Paylib is effectively in its sunset phase, having transferred its massive user base to the Wero ecosystem. If you are selling tickets to French customers, you can expect Wero to be the primary method for instant mobile bank transfers moving forward. This consolidation is significantly simplifying the market, replacing a local solution with one that works just as well for a customer in Paris as for one in Berlin.

Spain

As far as the Wero rollout goes, Spain is taking a unique path focused on connection rather than immediate replacement. The dominant local player, Bizum, remains incredibly popular and is not disappearing. Instead, Spanish banks have joined the EuroPA alliance, which aims to make Bizum fully interoperable with Wero.

This means that while your Spanish customers will likely continue using their beloved Bizum app, the backend is being connected to the broader European network. In the near future, a Spanish user with Bizum will be able to pay using Wero, and vice versa.
