When a fan scarf becomes a stadium ticket

On 14 August, season-ticket holders at Dijon FCO walked into Gaston-Gérard wearing their access pass around their neck. No card, no phone. Just a scarf with an NFC chip sewn into the fabric.

A first in France, and the reaction showed it: over 2 million views on the club's socials and international press picking it up within days. The solution was built with NFC and access control technology from the Weezevent Group.

How it works

Supporters buy their season ticket online and receive a QR code by email. At the club shop, staff scan the code, grab a scarf with a blank NFC chip near the leather club logo, and tap it against the terminal. That pairs the scarf to the season ticket. Done.

At the stadium gate, supporters hold up their scarves at the turnstile instead of digging out a card. Forgot the scarf? The email confirmation still works. Lost it? The chip gets deactivated remotely. And no new hardware was needed, the existing access control setup already reads NFC.

More than a gimmick

A season-ticket card sits in a wallet. A scarf is something you actually bring to a match. By turning it into the access pass, DFCO removed a step from entry and got more scarves into the stands at the same time.

"The idea was to innovate and give fans a stronger sense of belonging," said Paul Fauvel, DFCO's managing director.

And it doesn't stop at access. The club already plans to let supporters pay for food and drinks inside the stadium with their scarf - same as a cashless card.

NFC beyond football

The scarf is one use case. The technology works in wristbands, badges, cards, lanyards, and even cups. What you embed the chip in depends on your event and your audience. What the chip can do stays the same: access control, cashless payments, brand activations, crew accreditation, and eco-cup deposits.

The tech is proven. The question for organisers is, 'How are you going to use it?'
